We’re delighted to announce that Haemochromatosis UK has received a grant from the National Lottery Community Fund to further develop our “people-powered” clinical awareness raising.

This grant will help us to develop our clinician education programme and help raise awareness of the condition in the general public. Your Patient Will See You Now is a people-led project to empower 60-100 people with genetic haemochromatosis to become experts in our own condition – so we can raise the knowledge and awareness levels of this common yet underdiagnoses genetic condition in our communities – both amongst healthcare professionals and the general public.

This project will enable us to tackle this condition at the very earliest stages. Through a series of online webinars, we as patients will gain expertise in haemochromatosis and boost presentation skills so we can confidently deliver educational presentations to local surgeries (GPs and nurses), pharmacies, staff stalls in local hospitals and speak publicly at local community events (eg U3A, Rotary meetings, community gatherings etc).

Neil McClements, CEO of Haemochromatosis UK welcomed the news – “This funding demonstrates our credibility to key funders of our people-powered approach to awareness raising. Volunteering is key to our community. With this grant we’ll be able to train and support our expert patient volunteers to get the message out about genetic haemochromatosis. With their support, we’ll be able to reach clinicians across the UK that we’d otherwise struggle to reach.”
