Our charity is at the forefront of medical research into genetic haemochromatosis. So we're pleased to announce the 2024 Fernau Medical Research Award and Nursing & Healthcare Practitioner Best Practice Award.

Furnau Medical Research Award

The Furnau Award is named after our founder Janet Furnau MBE. It is available to UK-registered voluntary groups/charities, community groups/collectives and institutions, including universities and NHS trusts for new research projects  that will advance good clinical practice in the diagnosis and management of genetic haemochromatosis.

Previous winners have included Dr Prabhsimran Singh, Hepatology Research Fellow, York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust for a study of the prevalence of cirrhosis and its related complications amongst patients with genetic haemochromatosis in England.

Haemochromatosis UK Nursing & Healthcare Practitioner Best Practice Award

This award is for a nurse-led research project that advances patient safety and/or the care of people with genetic haemochromatosis. Entries may cover any aspect of genetic haemochromatosis diagnosis, treatment, management and monitoring or associated patient education.

Previous winners include Liver Specialist Nurse Alex Allcoat based at St Helens & Knowsley Teaching Hospital whose post-pandemic project identified genetic haemochromatosis patients who had become "lost" in the system, between hospital departments.

Both awards are now open for applications before Noon on Friday 29th September 2023. For further details and to apply, visit the awards page.
